How to Choose Decking Material in the Pacific Northwest: Composite vs Wood (2026)

Short answer

For most Bellevue and Eastside homes, composite decking is the best long-term choice because it resists moss, rot and splinters in our wet climate with little upkeep. Wood costs less up front but needs regular cleaning and sealing. In 2026 a 200 sq ft wood deck costs about $14,000 to $26,000 and a composite deck about $20,000 to $38,000.

Deck material costs on the Eastside (2026)

Deck type Typical 2026 cost Upkeep
Wood deck (about 200 sq ft) $14,000 to $26,000 Clean and seal regularly
Composite deck (about 200 sq ft) $20,000 to $38,000 Wash once or twice a year
Multi-level deck $35,000 to $70,000+ Depends on material
Covered deck or pergola $22,000 to $55,000+ Roof and gutters added

A standard deck usually takes 8 to 14 weeks from signed contract to final inspection, including permits.

Composite vs wood in a wet climate

  • Moisture and moss. Months of rain and shade mean wood decks grow moss and algae and can rot at the joists and edges. Capped composite boards resist water and staining.
  • Maintenance. Cedar and pressure-treated decks need cleaning and resealing to stay sound. Composite needs a wash and the occasional moss treatment.
  • Look and feel. Real cedar has warmth and smell that composite cannot copy. Modern composite comes in wood-grain colors that hold up better over time.
  • Cost over time. Wood is cheaper on day one. Composite often costs less over the deck’s life once sealing and board replacement are counted.

Five things to check before you choose

  1. Sun and shade. Shaded, north-facing decks stay wet longer, which favors composite.
  2. Framing. The structure under the boards matters as much as the boards. Ask how joists are protected from water.
  3. Railings. Aluminum, cable or glass railings change both the view and the budget.
  4. Cover. A covered patio or pergola extends deck season through the rainy months.
  5. Permits. Most new decks need a building permit, especially when raised or attached to the house.
