How to Choose Kitchen Cabinets: Stock vs Semi-Custom vs Custom (2026 Guide)

By the Renovision Design & Build team · Bellevue, WA · WA license RENOVDB768D7

Sage green inset shaker custom kitchen cabinets with white oak dovetail drawers and brass knobs

Short answer

Choose kitchen cabinets by construction first, then style. Look for plywood boxes, solid-wood or quality painted doors, full-extension soft-close drawers and a finish that suits our humid climate. Stock cabinets are fastest and cheapest, semi-custom adds sizes and finishes, and custom cabinets fit the space exactly but take the longest to build.

Stock vs semi-custom vs custom cabinets

Type What you get Best for
Stock Set sizes and finishes, ready quickly Rentals, tight budgets, simple layouts
Semi-custom More sizes, finishes and storage options Most family kitchen remodels
Custom Built to exact dimensions and any finish Unusual spaces, high-end and luxury kitchens

What to look for in quality cabinets

  • Box material. Plywood boxes hold screws and resist moisture better than particleboard.
  • Drawers. Dovetail joints and full-extension, soft-close slides last longer.
  • Doors. Shaker, slab and inset styles each change the look and the cost. Inset doors cost more and need precise installation.
  • Finish. Factory-applied paint or stain holds up better than site-painted finishes.
  • Hardware. Hinges and slides are what wear out first, so they are worth paying for.

How cabinets affect your remodel budget and timeline

Cabinets are one of the largest line items in a kitchen remodel, and custom cabinets add lead time. Ordering them before demolition keeps the kitchen from sitting unfinished. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stock, semi-custom and custom cabinets?

Stock cabinets come in set sizes and finishes, semi-custom adds more sizes and options, and custom cabinets are built to the exact dimensions of your kitchen.

What is the best material for kitchen cabinet boxes?

Plywood boxes are generally stronger and more moisture-resistant than particleboard.

Are custom cabinets worth it?

They are worth it for unusual layouts, tall ceilings or high-end kitchens where an exact fit and finish matter.

How long do custom kitchen cabinets take?

Custom cabinets take longer than stock or semi-custom, so order them early, before demolition starts.

Should I paint or replace my kitchen cabinets?

If the boxes are solid and the layout works, refinishing or new doors can be enough. If boxes are damaged or the layout is changing, replace them.
